Electromagnetic Radiation: A Scientific Overview

Public Exposure: DNA, Democracy and the Wireless Revolution DVD (length 58 minutes) Co-produced by Libby Kelley, CWTI and EON International, shown at the 2003 World Social Forum in Porto Alegre, Brazil; awarded first place in the "Globalization" category at the Santa Cruz Earth Vision Film Festival, 2001.

The Council on Wireless Technology Impacts commissioned Public Exposure to tell the people what the telecommunications and broadcast industries prefers not to discuss – that increasing reliance on wireless communications poses a major environmental health threat.

This film was produced in the year 2000, and is still in high demand worldwide. Public Exposure was the first film to explore the potential health risks and social concerns triggered by the proliferation of transmitting antennas and rapid consumer adaptation to wireless communications technology. The film evaluates the state of the science and the public policies from an international citizen's rights and consumer advocacy perspective.

Public Exposure features the late Dr. Neil Cherry, biophysicist, New Zealand; the late Dr. John Goldsmith M.D.; Henry Lai, research scientist, University of Washington; Dr. Jerry Phillips, biochemist; Dr. Ollie Johansson, Karolinka Institute in Sweden; and, Cindy Sage, EMF Consultant.

Public Exposure describes the work of citizen activists like Deb Carney and Libby Kelley who have sought to protect their communities; former Ericsson engineer, Per Segerback, whose occupational exposure to electromagnetic radiation led to his developing electrical hypersensitivity; former California State Senator Tom Hayden, who fought to enact legislation to do a public health review of the scientific studies; and, actor Linda Evans, who was engaged in a personal battle to oppose cell towers in her community.

Public Exposure exposes the role corporations play as they seek profits over people by controlling the marketing messages that emphasize convenience and safety while silencing the growing concerns over environmental and health effects . CWTI joins the call for application of the Precautionary Principle, which simply means, "do no harm", especially to our children, until informed public health policies are adopted. We offer this film with the hope that it will educate and empower people everywhere, especially those who are "still in the dark".

"It really conveys very powerfully how wide the citizen concern is in a kind of kaleidoscope of all the different issues. I think it is just spectacular and ought to get as wide a distribution as possible."

Whitney Seymour, Jr, Seymour and Landy Law Offices
Legal counsel for Citizens for the Appropriate Placement of Telecommunications Facilities (CAPTF) in appeal to U.S. Supreme Court, challenging the constitutionality of the Federal Telecommunications Act of 1996, Section 704, based on the 10th amendment violations, preemption of reserved state powers. The Court denied the appeal in 2000

"Libby Kelley has created a powerful and credible teaching tool on one of the most complex and vexing issues of our times – the health and environmental effects of wireless technology. No planning or zoning commission should site a cell tower without studying it carefully."
B. Blake Levitt

CWTI participated in a presentation to Congressional Staff at the U.S. Capitol in Washington DC in July 2001, organized by the EMR Network, a national citizens networking group on electromagnetic radiation, along with CARE (the Canyon Area Residents for the Environment).

We offer you a film from that presentation, featuring Dr. Litovitz, a prominent researcher, who gave an authoritative and compelling overview of the science which points to adverse health effects due to chronic exposure to electromagnetic radiation sources that occur below the current U.S. government safety limits. Litovitz refers to policy findings at the time in advising limited use of cell phones and more precaution in siting wireless facilities in communities. A Powerpoint presentation is included.

This film serves as a call to action to support needed federal legislation to be brought by Members of Congress. For more information on any current legislative developments, go to the EMR Policy Institute website.
