The future of cell phones is on the horizon. The 4th generation technology will bring high powered technology that will cause more RF radiation exposure from handheld devices and antennas and create another layer of radiation in our communities starting in 2008. Listen to Libby Kelley, who was interviewed on the KPFA radio Layna Berman Show on December 4, 2007 regarding "WIMax: The Next Wireless Exposure". You will need to pay the station a $5 download fee to access the MP3 file.

Local government may be further preempted in siting antennas. In fact, California just enacted state laws that would (1) grant the Public Utilities Commission jurisdiction over siting of WIMAX antennas with no public notice and review; and, (2) new collocation antennas are no longer subject to public notice and review when antennas are added or changed once these are installed. Do you know what bills are going through your state legislature to further extend the Federal telecommunications laws?

WiFi Proposal in San Francisco Update: SNAFU, the San Francisco Neighborhoods Antenna Free Union has been appealing a proposed municipal city-wide WiFi system under consideration by the San Francisco Board of Supervisors. In that appeal, they request an environmental review under California's environmental laws before any decisions are made. In early September, 2007, Google and Earthlink, the corporate partners whose proposal was under consideration, backed out and those negotiations have stopped. On September 11, 2007, the San Francisco Board of Supervisors tabled SNAFU's appeal agreeing that it could be heard at a later date if another WiFi plan were considered. Meanwhile, on July 20, 2007, the German government issued a safety warning on WiFi systems, especially for children and youth and advised that schools should avoid using these systems if possible. See more information about WiFi health risks and progress made in installing municipal WiFi in other U.S. cities, below. We will keep you informed of new developments on this site.
